The Dark Side - Celestial Shadows in Bronze

The Dark Side - Celestial Shadows in Bronze

The Umbra Vase group were originally inspired by the shadows created by celestial bodies such as planets or the moon. The shadow behind these bodies floating in space yawns deeply as a conical shadow behind them. This deep darkness is known as the Umbra. The Umbra vases convey a partially eclipsed moon - its spherical form disappearing into the darkness of shadow. The opacity of the surface does not reflect back but consumes the light. The vases sit slightly rocked on a gentle ellipse that contrasts with the sharp curve of the upper edge. The mouth is narrow, allowing only the simplest and most edited floral arrangement. Three sizes sit creating new forms and shadows amongst themselves.

The image that inspired the Umbra Group.  An Umbra is the shadow behind the celestial body - the dark side.
