Alexander Lamont has perfected the 18th century technique of turning sand into a solid and elegant textured surface. Initially used as a counterbalance to the high shine of the burnished gold leaf in the heavily carved picture frames hung in the churches and cathedrals of Europe it still remains a uniquely textural finish.
The Bague Spot side table’s smooth bronze frame serves as a polished foil to the sands rough surface. The patinated bronze frame also provides tonal contrasts that enrich the gilded sand’s glistening appearance. As in many of the techniques we employ, the table comes alive through careful layer upon layer of precise workmanship and skill until “a golden light” exudes from the piece. The results are pleasantly raw and coarse to the touch, yet resplendant and illuminating to the eye.
