Cornish Light

17 July 2014 Posted by Alexander

Cornwall embodies a certain dream of England; this small island, so famous for its rain and low leaden skies. Cornwall is the most westerly county in England, near where I grew up in Somerset, and has a fierce sense of identity different from everywhere else here. I visit Cornwall for two reasons every year. Firstly and most importantly because my kind and beautiful Mum has made a small village beside the sea her home. Secondly, like so many artists, I come for the light. St Ives drew creators including Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Bernard Leach. Today Falmouth University has one of the best Art Colleges in England. The light is remarkable for how it changes every minute of the day, especially as it touches the sea that surrounds Cornwall. This is best observed while sitting on an empty wind swept beach.
